Monitoring your iPhone 4S data usage is necessary if you're not subscribed to an unlimited data plan. For example, if your carrier offers you a 1 GB data each month, you have to be able to know how much you have already consumed to avoid huge data usage excesses that might surprise you in your next bill. The ability to monitor of data usage is offered as a built-in feature in iPhone 4S and can be easily accessed in one easy step.
Go to Settings > General > Usage > Cellular Usage. Under Cellular Network Data, you'll see Sent and Received data statistics. In the sample screen shot below, Sent data is 8.0 MB and Received is 64.1 MB. If you have a 1 GB data subscription, then that means you have 938.6 MB of data left for consumption until the end of your current phone bill cycle. Every time you connect to the Internet via 3G (or Edge) the statistics under Cellular Network Data Usage will get updated, and so you will always have a valid real-time data usage estimate to monitor. This statistics do not change when you use the Internet via Wi-Fi connection.
The Cellular Network Data statistics in iPhone 4S does not only let you keep track of your data usage for phone bill monitoring purposes. It also lets you get an estimate on how much data an app or "activity" consumes. For example if you use emails constantly in one day, then the increase in Cellular Network Data Usage will tell you how much data you consume on emailing. If you use Facebook app whole day, then monitoring the data usage increase will let you know how much data the Facebook app consumes. Lastly, you can select Reset Statistics at the bottom of the Cellular Usage panel to zero down the Cellular Network Data statistics. You might want to reset cellular data usage statistics for a fresh monitoring on your next phone bill cycle. Of course you can choose not to reset and the Cellular Network Data statistics will show your data usage for your present and previous bill cycle.
