Coolest iPhone Application (of the day)

Autonomy (the largest British software company) has created a visual recognition application called Aurasma that overlays content on real world images. The way Aurasma works is it uses the iPhone and iPad to perform visual recognition of a 2D image or object and overlays related video or other content on the screen in real-time.

One example of the technology is that you can point your phone at a movie poster and see a related video or trailer. Other examples are in the video demonstration below of the technology in action:

Autonomy says the application is free (should be available in May 2011) and will be able to recognize up to half a million images. The way the company plans to make money is by charging businesses for advertisements displayed when images are scanned with the app.
